Box Score 2 NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad won a pair of games over visiting York (PA) Sunday afternoon.
The Captains won game one, 9-7.
CNU scored two runs in each of the first two innings. The Spartans cut the lead in half with two runs in the top of the fourth but Christopher Newport answered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.
York pushed across two more in the fifth and CNU added another in the bottom of the inning. The Captains scored two more in the bottom of the sixth to lead 9-4. YCP's come back fell short as they only scored three in the seventh.
Chris Despins was 1-for-4 with a two-run home run. Mike Giarrizzi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Trae Bailey went 2-for-4 with two RBI, Eric Cole finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Shannon Mark was 2-for-3 with three runs.
Ian Lenda tossed four innings, allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out three. Kevin Moreland threw the final two innings, allowing three runs on four hits and picked up the save.
In game two, Christopher Newport rolled past York, 12-1.
The Captains erupted for 16 hits. CNU scored once in the first, four in the second and third innings, and three more in the fifth.
Bailey finished 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs scored. Despins went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Parker Neal finished 2-for-3 with three runs and a double. Michael Romett was 2-for-4 with two RBI, and David Fennessey went 2-for-3.
Brandon Berry went the distance, allowing one run on six hits, walked none and struck out two to improve to 5-1.
The Spartans fall to 26-12 while CNU improves to 24-10-1. The Captains finish the regular season Saturday when they host Stevenson for two games beginning at 1 pm.
