Baseball Drops No. 2 Salisbury, 7-4

NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad defeated No. 2 Salisbury, 7-4, Friday afternoon.

The Sea Gulls struck first with a single run in the top of the first. The Captains tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when Steven Lindemuth, who doubled, scored on a wild pitch.

In the fourth, Salisbury pushed across a single run in the top half of the inning and CNU tied it on Eric Cole's RBI ground out in the bottom of the inning.

Salisbury scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Christopher Newport answered with two runs of its own. Michael Romett's single and Cole's RBI sacrifice fly tied the score at 4-all.

The Captains took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Parker Neal doubled home Mike Giarrizzi and Chris Despins singled home Neal to put CNU on top. Neal added an RBI sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Despins finished 2-for-4 and Lindemuth and Shannon Mark were both 2-for-3.

Josh Brinkman started and lasted 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on five hits. He walked seven and struck out two. Kevin Moreland was outstanding in relief, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing one hit, walked one and struck out three, improving to 3-0.

The Sea Gulls fall to 33-6 while the Captains improve to 22-9-1. These two teams meet again Saturday, at Salisbury, with first pitch set for 1 pm.
