Box Score BURLINGTON, NC – Christopher Newport's baseball squad dropped a 2-1 decision in 11 innings to Ferrum on day one of the USA South Conference Tournament.
The Captains took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Ben Lenda's single that scored Michael Romett.
The Panthers tied the score in the top of the seventh.
In the 11th, reliever Mike Giarrizzi recorded the first out of the inning, then allowed a walk and back-to-back singles that scored the game-winner.
Trae Bailey finished 2-for-4 and Romett was 2-for-5.
Josh Brinkman started and threw a gem, going 9 1/3 innings, allowing one run on seven hits while walking one and striking out 10. Giarrizzi relieved Brinkman in the top of the 10th, going 1 2/3 innings and gave up his first run of the year, while striking out four and walking one.
Ferrum improves to 13-13 and will play Averett at 9 am at Burlington Athletic Stadium. CNU will take on No. 2 seeded Methodist at 9:30 am at Elon University's Latham Park.
