NC Wesleyan Comes From Behind To Down Baseball, 7-6

ROCKY MOUNT, NC – NC Wesleyan trailed 6-2 and scored four times in the bottom of the sixth and scored the game-winner in the seventh to cap a 7-6 come from behind win over Christopher Newport's baseball team Sunday afternoon in USA South play.

The Captains Michael Romett again put CNU on top early, smacking his second home run in as many games. This time, his two-run shot in the second put CNU on top, 2-0.

In the third, Chris Despins' double scored Trae Bailey to put Christopher Newport up, 3-0. The Bishops pushed across a single run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-1.

CNU scored twice on three hits and to NC Wesleyan errors in the top of the fifth to take a 5-1 lead. The Bishops plated a single run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to three, 5-2.

The Captains Mike Giarrizzi extended the CNU lead to four, 6-2 in the top of the sixth, but the Bishops wasted no time in tying the game up in the bottom of the inning. NC Wesleyan scored four times on three hits and one costly Christopher Newport error to knot the game at 6-6.

The Bishops scored the game-winner in the seventh on a solo home run.

Giarrizzi and Parker Neal both finished 3-for-4. Trae Bailey was 3-for-5 and Romett went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Jason Jenkins started and went six innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on nine hits, walked three and struck out four. Chris Malvagna suffered the loss in relief, tossing two innings, allowing one run on two hits and struck out four.

NC Wesleyan improves to 5-10 overall and 1-1 in USA South action. Christopher Newport falls to 8-2-1 on the year and 1-1 in conference play.

CNU returns to action Tuesday when they host Randolph-Macon in a make-up game with first pitch set for 3 pm.
