Box Score ROCKY MOUNT, NC – Christopher Newport's baseball squad scored nine runs in the sixth inning to defeat NC Wesleyan, 11-5, Saturday afternoon in USA South action.
The Captains got on the board in the second inning on Michael Romett's solo shot. The Bishops knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth on a bases loaded hit batsman.
CNU erupted for nine runs in the sixth on seven hits. They also benefited from three Bishop errors in the inning. Mike Giarrizzi doubled home a run but the big hit came off the bat of Zach Hutchison and Eric Cole when they each singled home two runs.
NC Wesleyan struck for two runs in the bottom of the sixth and plated two more in the seventh to cut the Captains lead to 10-5. Christopher Newport scored an insurance run on Trae Bailey's RBI sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Giarrizzi finished 3-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Hutchison was also 3-for-6 and finished with two RBI. Cole went 2-for-6 with two RBI, and Romett went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Josh Brinkman picked up his second winning, tossing 5 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, walking none and striking out five. Ian Lenda went an inning and two-thirds and Giarrizzi tossed the final two innings, allowed one hit, walked one and struck out three.
NC Wesleyan falls to 4-10 on the year and 0-1 in USA South play while CNU improves to 8-1-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action.
These two teams meet again Sunday with first pitch set for 1 pm.
