Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad scored twice in the ninth to force extra innings and won the game in the bottom of the 11th, 4-3, over Shenandoah in a USA South contest Saturday afternoon.
The Captains struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first on Steven Lindemuth's RBI single. The Hornets wasted no time in tying the score at one on a run in the top of the third.
Shenandoah took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the frame, Mike Giarrizzi singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on Parker Neal's single. Both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Trae Bailey followed with an infield single, scoring Giarrizzi. Chris Despins followed and reached on an error, scoring Neal to tie the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the 11th, Eric Cole singled with one out and promptly stole second. Joey Martin was intentionally walked and Lindemuth came up with the big knock, singling to right, scoring Cole with the game-winner.
Lindemuth finished 3-for-5 with two RBI. Giarrizzi was 2-for-5 and Cole went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.
Josh Brinkman started and threw eight solid innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, walked two and struck out seven. Giarrizzi came in relief to pick up the win. The southpaw tossed three innings, allowed two hits, and recorded seven of the nine outs he recorded, via strikeout.
The Hornets fall to 16-4 overall and 0-3 in USA South play. Christopher Newport improves to 13-3-1 on the year and 3-2 in conference action.
These two teams conclude their series Sunday at 1 pm.
