Box Score 2 DANVILLE, VA – Christopher Newport's baseball squad split a pair of games at Averett Monday afternoon.
The Cougars won the first game in dramatic fashion. AU took game one, 5-4, on a two-out solo walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth.
The Captains took an early 1-0 lead on Chris Despins RBI single in the first. Despins scored CNU's second run in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out. Averett cut the lead to 2-1 with a single run in the bottom of the inning.
The Cougars pushed across two in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Parker Neal's RBI single in the sixth knotted the score at 3-all. AU re-took the lead in the bottom of the eight and Christopher Newport tied it in the top of the ninth on Steven Lindemuth's RBI single, setting up the win in home half of the ninth for Averett.
Despins finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Neal drove in two.
Josh Brinkman started and went five innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walked four and struck out eight. Ian Lenda suffered the loss in relief, tossing 3 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out three.
CNU took game two, 7-3, in six innings. The game was called due to darkness.
The Captains scored once in the second, two more in the third, and four in the fourth, to account for all seven runs. Averett scored once in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
Trae Bailey led CNU going 2-for-2 with a two run home run and two runs scored. Despins went 2-for-3 with a run driven in, Michael Romett was 2-for-4 and Lindemuth finished 2-for-3.
Jason Jenkins picked up the win, tossing 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, walked three and struck out six.
Averett is now 9-11 overall and 2-2 in USA South play. Christopher Newport is 11-3-1 on the year and 2-2 in conference action.
The Captains return to the diamond Wednesday when they head to cross-water rival VA Wesleyan with first pitch set for 3 pm.
