Women's Basketball Stops Shenandoah, 80-61

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU women's basketball team built a 12-point halftime lead and cruised home with an 80-61 victory over Shenandoah in the first USA South game of the year for both teams, Wednesday night at the Freeman Center.

The Captains took the lead for good with 12:08 to play in the first half on a jumper by Jerlisa Bowser. CNU built the margin to 34-22 at the half.

The Captains quickly increased the lead to 54-32 with 12:40 to go on a three-pointer by Chelsie Schweers and eventually led by as many as 24.

Schweers finished with a season-high 26 points on 10-14 shooting, including 4-7 on three-pointers. Kimmy Hopkins added ten points, while Jessica Moore had eight. Moore and Hopkins each had eight rebounds.

Katherine Flint was the only Hornet in double figures, with 10 points, while Alexis Hargbol grabbed 12 rebounds.

Shenandoah is now 2-3 for the year. The Captains are 4-0 and travel to Peace for  4 p.m. game Saturday.
