NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Leading for virtually the entire game, the CNU women ran their season-opening winning streak to seven with a 74-61 win over Virginia Wesleyan Tuesday night at the Freeman Center.
CNU took the lead to stay, 7-4, on a three-pointer by
Chelsie Schweers less than three minutes into the game.
By halftime the Captains had opened a 16-point margin, 41-25, and expanded it to as many as 18 points, 57-39, with 9:08 to go.
But pressure by the Marlins reduced CNU's lead to nine on three occasions, the last time 68-59 with 2:46 remaining.
The Captains were led by
Jessica Moore with a season-high 20 points, including 8-13 shooting. Schweers added 19, while
Kimmy Hopkins and
Barbara Davis contributed ten each. Davis also had nine rebounds and blocked two shots.
Jocelyn Spencer paced the Marlins, now 4-4 on the year, with 15 points, while Shawnee Lewis had 13 and Kristen Blalock 12.
CNU returns to action Friday at the Freeman Center for a 6 p.m. game with Wesley.
