Desperation Three Sinks Captains Against Lynchburg, 74-73

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Steven Echols' desperation three-pointer in overtime from deep in the left corner, and with defenders in his face, gave Lynchburg a 74-73 victory over CNU on the final day of the Captains Classic Sunday afternoon.

Echols, who scored a game-high 33 points, scored 11 of the Hornets' 12 overtime points including the game-winner with three seconds remaining.

The shot came after Brian Hermann had put CNU on top, 73-71 by making the first half of a one-and-one with 16 seconds to play.

CNU trailed, 38-34 at halftime, but went in front 58-56 with 6:22 to play on a jumper by Hermann, and held the lead until Echols scored with seven seconds remaining to tie the game at 62.

Xavier Parham the raced the ball end to end, missing a driving layup. Hermann rebounded and dunked the ball back in a split second after the buzzer sounded.

Josh Russell paced CNU with 16 points, including 4-8 on three-pointers. Jake Capin added 14 points, hitting 3-4 threes and Hermann added 14.
