NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The CNU women's basketball team drew away in the last five and a half minutes and scored a 71-57 win over Washington & Lee Saturday at the Freeman Center.
Leading, 55-53, the Captains scored ten unanswered points to build a 65-53 margin with 2:44 to go. The Generals never got closer than eight the rest of the way.
In the first half CNU fell behind by as many as eight points, 29-21, with 6:44 left. But a layup by Barbara Davis with 15 seconds to go in the half cut the deficit to 34-32.
The Captains grabbed the lead for good on a layup Jessica Moore at the 10:06 mark of the second half.
CNU was paced by Chelsie Schweers who scored 22 points. Kimmy Hopkins added 14 and Lauren Gural led in rebounding with seven. The Captains out-shot the Generals, 42 to 37 percent and out-rebounded them, 36-29. W&L was paced by Becca Bolton with 20 points.
The 2-0 Captains face their first round game, visiting St. Mary's Tuesday.
