Steve Shaw

Steve Shaw

Steve Shaw led the Christopher Newport University men's soccer team from 1996-2018 before announcing his retirement on December 10, 2018. He guided the Captains to national prominence as the program became the first CNU sport to earn a national ranking of number one, reached the National Quarterfinals four times, and captured five conference tournament titles between 2009-2016.

Completing his 23rd season in 2018, Shaw became just the fourth coach in CNU Athletics history to reach 20 years of service for the Captains. At the start of his final season, Shaw ranked 16th among active head coaches in career winning percentage while also ranking 11th all-time among coaches with at least 20 years experience at a Division III school. He recorded an overall record of 319-110-36 for a winning percentage of .722. His teams also went 119-26-13 in conference play (.794) and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times, including eight trips since 2006.

With his second win of 2017, Shaw picked up his 300th career victory, becoming the fifth coach in CNU Athletics history to eclipse the 300-win plateau. Following the 2016 season in which the Captains won their second CAC Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round, Shaw was named the VaSID State Coach of the Year for the third time (2008, 2014). He helped guide the Captains to one of the most successful seasons in program history after CNU finished 18-3-1 with an unbeaten conference season at 8-0-1.

Over the last two decades, Shaw repeatedly orchestrated high water marks for the CNU men's soccer program in both the regular and postseason. In 2009, the Captains became the first program in school history, men's or women's, to earn a number one national ranking and went on to earn the top spot again in 2010. He guided CNU to back-to-back sectional championship games in the 2008 & 2009 NCAA Tournaments and reached the national quarterfinals four times overall.  Christopher Newport won three straight USA South Athletic Conference championships from 2009-11 and added two more tournament titles after joining the Capital Athletic Conference in 2014 and 2016.

For his efforts, Shaw was named the NSCAA Region Coach of the Year four times (2000, 2009, 2011, and 2014) and was the Conference Coach of the Year eight times in 23 seasons. Shaw came to CNU following six seasons as an assistant at the College of William & Mary and also served 15 years coaching at the high school level. In his remarkable coaching career of over 40 years, he has produced an overall record of 491-173-65 (.718).

His first team at CNU in 1996 surprised everyone by going 13-5 just one year after the program had suffered through a 5-11 season. From there, the Captains finished over .500 in all but one season during his tenure, while averaging nearly 14 wins a year. He ranks in the Top-50 nationally among the winningest coaches all-time at any of the three NCAA Divisions and is in the Top-20 among Division III coaches.

Shaw, a 1974 graduate of Morehead State, was named CNU's head coach in the summer of 1996 and helped guide the Captains to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2000 season. He won his 300th game at Christopher Newport at the start of the 2017 season, becoming one of fewer than 25 coaches in Division III to reach the milestone.

Also a Spanish instructor at Christopher Newport, Shaw's passion for working with young people extends well beyond the sidelines at Captains Field. He mentors youth soccer players from the inner city as well as the Virginia Legacy Soccer Club. He has made two trips to Africa, where he has conducted clinics and donated soccer equipment while working with the International Young Life Organization. He has also made charitable international trips to China where he has helped small villages build bridges, taught English, and helped provide athletic equipment to the communities he visits.

Shaw and his wife Alice reside in Newport News, VA.
