Jay Kirland

Jay Kirland returned to the CNU football program in March of 2015, named Defensive Coordinator of the Captains.

Kirland, a CNU graduate who played for Matt Kelchner from 2006-2009, had been an assistant coach at Averett University in Danville from 2011 through the 2014 season. He was promoted to the position of defensive coordinator in 2014 after previously serving as the program's defensive backs coach since 2011.

The Woodbridge, Va., native worked as a student-assistant on Kelchner’s staff during the 2010 season. He assisted primarily with defensive backs, and guided two all-conference performers in a CNU secondary that ranked second in the USA South in interceptions.  In addition, Kirland helped the Captains rank in the top three of the conference in pass defense, pass defense efficiency, and total defense.

Kirland earned his bachelor’s degree from Christopher Newport in 2010 and then earned his master's degree in business administration from Averett in 2013.
