Day 3 - Locals and Our Luau...

It's Friday and our first full day in Hawaii and it definitely was a full day. We really got a taste of Hawaiian culture today. First, we woke up at 8 am to get some breakfast before our practice at 10. We worked out at a local high school for about two hours and then we got to meet some of the middle schoolers and talk to them for a little bit after we were done. After practice, we got some free time to ourselves -- after we showered and got ready, we went to get some lunch and do a little shopping. There wasn't much time for shopping because we had to leave pretty early for a Luau.

The bus ride was about an hour long, but was pretty entertaining. Our tour guide's name was Georgie and she was pretty funny. On the way there, she gave us a rundown of the Hawaiian culture, including some slang words. She also gave us a preview of what to expect on the menu and recommended that we try everything at least once. The Luau location was absolutely beautiful, right on the beach. Pretty soon after we got there, we got to watch the ceremony in which they took the pig out from under the ground. Then the festivities began. First, we ate. The menu included local macaroni salad, cole slaw, mixed bean salad and tossed tomato salad; rice and chicken flavored long rice noodles, poi (a local delicacy), friend chicken, beef, and the main course, PIG! Almost everything was very delicious.

After dinner came the entertainment. The ladies were able to go on stage and learn how to do some Hawaiian dances, which was a lot of fun and quite funny. The male and female dancers also did some local dances for us that were very fun. One of the male dancers (who Erin was quite fond of - don't tell her I told you that), actually lived in Newport News and went to Menchville High School. Small world!

We then headed back to the hotel, which at the time was going through a power problem -- so most of the power was out when we got back, which was fun because most of us were really tired (still jetlagged from the time difference). Everything got resolved, though, and we all made it back to our beds...

I'm looking forward to tomorrow when we can really check out Hawaii. Check back to CNUSports.com for updates and Go Captains!
