Five Captains Collect USTFCCCA National All-Academic Cross Country Honors

NEW ORLEANS -- As a result of their efforts both in and out of the classroom, five members of the Christopher Newport cross country teams have secured National All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Daniel Read earned the national recognition for the third straight year, while Monica Lannen was celebrated for the second consecutive season. Meanwhile, Read was joined by Jeff Dover and Jason Putnam from the men's squad, while Kathryn Wilson was celebrated along with Lannen on the women's side.

In order to earn the award, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher and finish in the top 25 percent at their respective regional championships.

Dover capped off his cross country career with an electrifying effort at the NCAA Championships. The senior star placed 21st at the title meet after completing the course in 24:44.59, which earned him All-American honors. Equally successful throughout the year, he collected All-Conference and All-Region accolades while moving to third on the program's all-time 8k list with a time of 24:20.3 at the South / Southeast Championships.

Also recording All-Conference and All-Region honors, Putnam pieced together an excellent sophomore campaign. The second-year speedster finished 12th at the CAC Championships before capping off his year by placing 27th at the regional competition. During the South / Southeast meet, he established a new PR with a time of 25:22.4, which places him 13th on the program's all-time performance list.

Rounding out the men's honorees, Read nabbed his third straight All-Academic award following one final dominant campaign. The senior earned All-League honors for the third time after placing 12th at the CAC Championships. Later, he returned for the NCAA meet and helped the Captains register a program-best third-place showing at the national competition after finishing fourth on the team with a time of 25:31.59.

Continuing her decorated career, Lannen was celebrated for the second time by the USTFCCA following a strong sophomore season. During the CAC Championships, she registered CNU's top effort after placing fifth with a 23:22.1 clocking. That earned her first-team All-Conference plaudits. Two weeks later, she came through with a top-50 effort at the regional meet after finishing 45th. Her time of 23:00.3 during that meet established a new PR and moved her to 13th on the program's all-time 6k performance list.

Earning national honors for the first time in her career, Wilson starred for the Captains as well. During the league meet, she picked up All-Conference honors after coming in 14th with a time of 24:10.1. Later, she capped off the season with a top-50 performance at the South / Southeast Championships. She eventually finished third on the team and 49th overall with a 23:09.5 mark. That also stands as the 16th-best time in CNU history.
