NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Five members of the Christopher Newport University softball squad received All-Region recognition for their efforts during the 2017 season. The announcement was made by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). A total of 360 student-athletes were selected, and CNU was one of seven schools to place five different players on the all-region list. The Captains concluded the year on Monday with a loss to Kean in the NCAA Regional Final in New Jersey, finishing with a 34-10 record.
Junior shortstop
Rachael Payne, who led the Captains in hitting, was a first team selection in the Atlantic Region. Payne concluded the season with a .428 average for the Captains, who won the Capital Athletic Conference's regular and post-season titles. Payne led the squad with 50 runs scored and tied for the team lead with 59 base hits.
Junior outfielder
Leah Andrews was named to the second team. Andrews posted 58 hits this year and topped the squad with six home runs, while also matching the team lead with 15 stolen bases.

Rachael Shiflett, as well as freshmen
Aubrey Bates and
Grace Wild received recognition. Shiflett wrapped up her career with a .399 average and tied for the team lead with 15 stolen bases. Bates recorded a 12-3 record in the pitching circle and a 1.80 earned run average. Wild, who took over as the squad's second baseman this season, hit .376 with 14 stolen bases.
The 2017 season marked the 11th straight NCAA appearance for the Captains and 15th overall appearance in the tournament.
Keith Parr's squad has won 30 or more games in the last 11 seasons as well.
