Campbell and Westerholm Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Track & Field Laurels; Women’s Team Also Honored

NEW ORLEANS -- Zach Campbell and Jennifer Westerholm earned National All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, while the entire Christopher Newport women's squad was also honored with an All-Academic Team Award following an exceptional performance both in and out of the classroom.

Westerholm earned the All-Academic honor for the fourth time after wrapping up a decorated career with a sensational senior season. Meanwhile, Campbell picked up his second straight national award following a tremendous junior year with the Captains. Additionally, the women's team picked up its sixth consecutive All-Academic honor after compiling a cumulative 3.18 GPA.

To be eligible for the national award, individual honorees must have compiled a 3.30 cumulative GPA and either competed at the NCAA National Championships or finished the year ranked among the national leaders in an individual or relay event. The team award is bestowed upon programs that have achieved at least a 3.10 cumulative GPA.

Incredible during her senior campaign, Westerholm earned All-American honors in the pentathlon after finishing fifth at the Indoor National Championships during the winter. That marked her fourth career trip to the NCAAs after also qualifying in the pentathlon in 2015 while reaching the outdoor championships in the heptathlon and 4x400-relay in 2014 and 2015.

In addition to her All-American award, Westerholm secured All-Region nods in eight events during the year, including five during the indoor season. That total equaled the most by any athlete in the nation. Honored as the CAC Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year, she won league titles in both the long jump and 400-hurdles during the spring after finishing as the CAC Indoor Championship's leading scorer in the winter.

Capping off her time at CNU as one of the most celebrated multi-athletes in program history, Westerholm was a 20-time All-Conference performer. She ranks among the program's all-time top-10 in five individual events, including second in the pentathlon and heptathlon. The Stafford, Virginia native also stands among the school's elite performers in the 400-hurdles and both the indoor and outdoor high jump.

An Academic All-Conference and All-District honoree as well, Westerholm graduated from Christopher Newport in the spring with a degree in marketing.

On the men's side, Campbell continued to build upon his impressive career with a solid junior season. A computer science major, he garnered All-American accolades over the winter after helping lead CNU's Distance Medley Relay to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The foursome also established a new school and conference record in the event with a time of 10:01.65 during the Tufts Final Qualifier.

Along with his work on the relay team, Campbell was equally impressive in distance events during the season. The third-year standout brought home All-Region plaudits in both the indoor mile and outdoor 1500. Additionally, he was an All-Conference honoree after placing second in the indoor mile and 800 before finishing as the runner-up in the outdoor 1500. He also helped the Distance Medley Relay capture the indoor conference title for the second straight year.

Along with his work on the track & field team, Campbell helped lead the cross country squad to the Capital Athletic Conference championship during the fall. The Berryville, Virginia native eventually helped the Captains finish second at the South / Southeast Regionals before competing in the NCAA Championships to round out the season.

Campbell also earned Academic All-Conference and All-District accolades to go along with his national award.
