Sam Porter Named to 2016 VaSID College Division Women's Basketball All-State Team

WINCHESTER, Va. -- The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) announced the 2016 College Division All-State Teams on Friday afternoon, listing Christopher Newport sophomore Sam Porter as a second team selection. Porter helped guide a young Captains squad to the NCAA Sweet 16 after a stellar second season with the team, leading the squad in both scoring and rebounding.

Porter collects the first All-State recognition of her career, and becomes just the third sophomore in program history to be named to the All-State team, joining CNU Athletic Hall of Famer Candace Bryant and all-time leading scorer Chelsie Schweers.

The Alexandria, Va. native also earned her first All-Conference selection, earning first team honors after averaging 10.2 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The 5-11 forward was one of only three players to start all 29 games for the Captains, and the sophomore averaged 23.0 minutes per game. She registered five double-doubles this season, including three straight in early February to earn CAC Player of the Week honors. Defensively, she was among the best players in the state, finishing the year with 81 total steals. Twice during the season she grabbed eight steals, including in a near triple-double performance at Salisbury with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 8 thefts.

Porter also led the team at the free-throw line in both attempts and made baskets, shooting 75% from the charity stripe in her second year. She currently ranks third all-time at CNU in free-throw percentage among players with at least 200 attempts in their career. This season, she also ranked third on the team in assists and blocked shots.

The Captains earned an at-large berth into the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship and reached the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons. Playing almost entirely with freshmen and sophomores, the Captains impressed with a 24-5 overall record this year, including a 15-3 mark in conference play.
