Complete Results

CAPE CHARLES, Va. -- After building a big lead through the first two rounds of the 2016 Capital Athletic Conference Championship, the Christopher Newport golf team cruised to its third straight league title on Sunday, winning by 21 strokes over second place Marymount University. Senior Sam Robinson (+13) captured the individual championship, wrapping up the 54-hole event as the only player without a round into the 80's.

With more at stake than in the previous two years, the Captains ran away with the three-peat victory, earning the league's first ever automatic berth into the NCAA Division III National Championship. CNU will advance to take on the field at the Midvale Country Club and Mendon Golf Club in Rochester, New York on May 10-13.

The Captains finished with all five starters tied for eighth or better on the individual leaderboard, including holding spots at first-, second- and fourth-place individually. CNU (+72) wrapped up the three-day event, the first ever 54-hole conference championship in CAC history, with a 936 (309-296-331). Marymount (+93) picked up 20 strokes on the Captains' lead with a strong performance in the third round, but finished 21 strokes back of the winning CNU squad with a 957 (320-326-311).

Robinson finished with the best score of the day for CNU on Sunday, separating from the pack and winning the event by three strokes. The CNU senior carried the lead from the start, holding in front of the pack after the first- and second-rounds. He joins Jonathan Howard and Matt DiSalvo as the Captains have now won three straight individual titles in addition to the team championships. Robinson carded a three-day 229 (74-76-79), leading the tournament in total pars with 38. He added 10 more even holes on Sunday, and also led the tournament field in Par 4 scoring with a 4.23 average.

Robinson was a first team All-Conference selection in 2014 and a second team All-Conference pick in 2015. He backed up his strong overall career performance by capping his swan song season with his first career win, capturing medalist honors.

Finishing in second place was rookie Joey Corlett (+16), who wrapped up the three-day event with a 232 (78-72-82). Corlett birdied one hole on Sunday and poured in nine pars to post a 10-over 82 on the final day, holding off a surge from Marymount's Cody Jameson (+18), who captured third place.

Matt DiSalvo (+20) finished out his conference championship defense in fourth place with a 236 (80-72-84), chipping in the third best score of the final round for CNU. Harry Nodwell (+24) took seventh place in the 35-player field, leaning on a strong effort in the first two rounds before finishing with a 240 (77-76-87). Finally, David Rabil closed out his first career appearance in the CAC Tournament with a tie for 8th place, scoring a 244 (82-76-86).

The win marks CNU's fourth conference championship in program history, all coming under head coach Jamie Coleman. CNU will make it's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship since 2012, and will be the first team ever to represent the Capital Athletic Conference in the national tournament.
