INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The NCAA National Championship Committee has announced the host sites for the 2016 Division III Women's Basketball Championship Sectional Round, with Christopher Newport slated to face host and third-ranked University of Scranton in the Round of 16. Christopher Newport (24-4) surged into the sectional round with a pair of impressive victories in the first weekend of action. CNU took down St. Joseph's (Maine), 65-47, before handling host and 11th-ranked Muhlenberg in the second round, 65-42. Scranton remained unbeaten this season with home wins over WPI, 67-42, and fellow CAC member Marymount, 60-44.
Ticket information and game times will be announced as it is made available during the week. All three games will be played in Scranton, Pennsylvania, at the John J. Long Center on the Royals' campus.
The Captains have rebounded after dropping their last two games before the NCAA Tournament, picking up right where their 17-game winning streak left off with a pair of dominating wins in the postseason. Team defense continues to lead the way for the Captains, holding six of their last seven opponents to 55 points or less, including both in the NCAA Tournament. Sophomore
Makenzie Fancher had a career night against Muhlenberg, pouring in 21 points and dishing eight assists to help lead an otherwise balanced performance offensively for the Captains. In the first round, it was
Jasmine Bonivel with the career-best effort, scoring 20 points to lead the way for CNU.
This season, three All-Conference players have been at the front of a young, talented team. The Captains' starting five are all second-year players and the next five off the bench are either freshmen or sophomores. Sophomores
Sam Porter, a first-team selection, with Fancher and
Devon Byrd, second team selections, earned All-Conference honors in 2015-16. Porter leads the team in scoring and rebounding with 10.1 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.
The Captains will face Scranton who, under the direction of first year head coach Trevor Woodruff, have impressed this season both offensively and defensively. The Lady Royals are led by Alexix Roman with over 18 points per game, with two other players averaging double figures as well. Defensively, Scranton is allowing just 50 points per game this season.
The two winning teams on Friday night will advance to play on Saturday with a bid to the 2016 Final Four on the line.
