NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Led by a school-record run by
Grayson Reid and a pair of historic efforts by
Hannah Shoemaker, the Christopher Newport track & field teams kicked off the 2016-17 campaign in fine fashion on Sunday during the CNU Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
Â
Headlining the afternoon, Reid continued a spectacular junior campaign. After earning All-Region plaudits during a record-setting fall as a member of the cross country team, he continued his assault on the record books on Sunday. In the 5000, he won the event with a time of 14:39.21, which shaved over 16 seconds off Matt Sinclair's previous program record of 14:55.34. That mark was established in 2003.
Â
Later in the meet, Reid returned to the track for another impressive effort in the 3000. Clocking in at 8:43.62, he moved to fifth on the program's all-time performance list in the event. Meanwhile, fellow standout
Jeff Dover jumped to third all-time in both the 3000 and mile. He finished second in the 3000 with a time of 8:38.40 and was the runner-up in the mile with a 4:15.58 clocking.
Â
Along with Dover and Reid, three other Captains also notched historic times in distance events. In the 3000,
JJ LaPointe moved to eighth (15:16.38), and
Sam Murch vaulted to ninth (15:21.80). In the mile,
Daniel Read climbed to seventh all-time after finishing in 4:19.18.
Â
In other events,
Cullen Monahan won the 800 in 1:57.91, while
Zach Campbell had a pair of top-five efforts after finishing third in the 800 (1:58.45) and fourth in the mile (4:20.39). Additionally,
Dominique Torres came in fifth in the long jump with a 6.51-meter leap, and
Ryan Scott finished third in the 60-hurdles with an 8.31 mark.
Â
On the women's side, Shoemaker paced the squad with two tremendous efforts on Sunday. The junior launched a 12.53-meter throw in the shot put, which marked the longest toss by a Captain since 2007 and the third-finest mark all-time. Equally impressive in the weight throw, she fired a 13.16-meter heave, which moved her to seventh on the program's all-time performance list.
Â
Three other Captains also registered historic showings, including a pair in the 5000.
Emmie Schmitt moved to sixth in program history in the discipline after placing second on Sunday with a time of 18:43.84. Meanwhile, freshman
Jessica Lee jumped to seventh all-time after clocking in at 18:45.40 during her indoor collegiate debut.
Â
Rounding out the history makers,
Jessica Brownell eclipsed 3.19 meters in the pole vault, which marked the sixth-highest clearance in CNU history.
Â
Also on the women's side,
Logan Harrington registered the meet's top time in the mile after crossing in 5:10.17. Following close behind,
Briana Stewart was second in 5:20.66, and
Gena Lewis was third in 5:27.85. Schmitt, Lee, Harrington, Stewart, and Lewis also had top-10 finishes in the 3000, while
Hannah Bowden was sixth in both the long jump (5.16 meters) and the prelims of the 60-hurdles (9.33).
Â
Christopher Newport will return to action on January 13 with the CNU Quadrangular at the Freeman Center.
