NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Christopher Newport track & field teams will open up the 2016-17 campaign on Sunday when the Captains host their annual Holiday Open at the Freeman Center.
 
The all-day action will kick off with the weight throw at 9 a.m. Track events start at 10:30 a.m. For those fans unable to make it to the meet, live results will be available at CNUsports.com. A direct link can be found at the top of this release and on the CNU schedule page.
 
Sunday's meet will feature representatives from over 15 colleges and universities, including eight Division I squads. Meanwhile, 80 Captains are slated to see their first action of the year during the meet.
 
Among the competitors making their season debut on Sunday, six Captains are returning after qualifying for the NCAA Indoor National Championships last year. On the women's side, Briana Sutton placed 10th in the nation in the pentathlon in 2016, while Logan Harrington was 15th in the 800. Meanwhile, the four members of the men's DMR squad return after Zach Campbell, Cullen Monahan, Jeff Dover, and Billy Rabil led the foursome to a fifth-place showing and secured All-American nods for their performance last winter.
 
Overall, Christopher Newport welcomes back 16 student-athletes who garnered USTFCCCA All-Region accolades for their work during the indoor season last year. Guided by those efforts, the Captains eventually swept both the men's and women's Capital Athletic Conference titles.
 
Following Sunday's meet, the Captains will have the next month off before returning for the CNU Quadrangular, which will be held on January 13 at the Freeman Center.
