Emmie Schmitt Wins Individual Title, Women’s Team Places Second at CAC Cross Country Championships

Final Results

HERSHEY, Pa. --
Emmie Schmitt won the Capital Athletic Conference individual title, and the Christopher Newport women's cross country team placed second overall during the CAC Championships on Saturday afternoon at the Hershey Entertainment Complex.

During the race, the Captains placed four runners in the top-nine, including the top-two finishers. Overall, the squad finished with a score of 33, which was just edged out by York (Pa.)'s 31. Salisbury came in third with 67 points, while Mary Washington (130) and Marymount (171) rounded out the top-five.

"It was disappointing to lose. It was an incredibly close battle, and today York just ran better," said head coach Matthew Barreau. "Our women competed well, and I am very proud of them. I feel for them - especially the seniors Emmie, Logan, and Briana - because I know exactly how much this means to them. All three have now been three-time First Team All-Conference, and Emmie and Briana have also been All-Conference all four years. That's truly remarkable."

Schmitt won the individual crown after posting the top time in the 6k with a 23:38.8 clocking. Freshman Jessica Lee followed right behind in second after finishing as the top freshman competitor with a 23:43.7 mark.

"I'm very happy for Emmie. Her win today was well-deserved, and I know she has really wanted this. To see her confidence grow to this point has been very exciting," said Barreau. "Jess has been a great performer all year, and she came through today yet again. I'm happy that she was the top freshman in the conference and earned rookie of the year honors."

Also earning spots in the top-10, Logan Harrington and Briana Stewart finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Harrington finished in 24:28.9, while Stewart was up next in 24:33.2 to round out an excellent showing by the program's senior class.

"I'm very proud of the leadership the seniors have provided throughout the year, and really over their entire four years," said Barreau. "Without their leadership, we wouldn't have even been in this position with all the young members on the team."

Among other top performers for CNU, Abigail May came in 13th in 24:42.3, Gena Lewis was 14th in 24:47.1, and Abby Snyder was 17th in 25:12.3.

"Abby May had an outstanding race today, and I'm very proud of the focus she has had over the last month while improving her health," said Barreau. "Abby Snyder also battled very well. Gena Lewis stepped up and ran strong. Really, while the result was disappointing, the coaches are all so very proud of the efforts of them all. We have Regionals in two weeks, and another goal to go after there."

Christopher Newport will return to action on November 12 with the South / Southeast Regionals in Berry, Georgia.
