CNU Cross Country Caps Off Busy Week with Impressive Effort at CNU Invitational

Final Results

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. --
Competing in their second meet of the week, the Christopher Newport cross country teams capped off a busy stretch and wrapped up the regular season with an impressive effort during the CNU Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Lee Hall Mansion.

Heading towards championship season, the Captains looked strong in their final tune-up before the CAC Championships as both the men and women captured team titles during their home competition. The men won the non-Division I portion of the meet with a score of 15, which out-distanced Elizabeth City State and Chowan. The women posted a score of 15 as well after defeating Bridgewater, Mary Baldwin, Chowan, and Elizabeth City State.

"The results were pretty positive today, but how we got there still needs some work," said head coach Matthew Barreau. "We can't play roulette with our races and just hope our results will be good. The execution of our race plans up front can be better. Then we will be even happier with our results."

On the men's side, Grayson Reid led the Captains in the 8k after finishing in 25:21, which marked the top clocking by a non-Division I runner. Daniel Read was second on the team and third overall with a 25:38 mark, while JJ LaPointe and Sam Murch crossed the line together in 25:46.

Rounding out the squad's top-five, Jeff Dover came across in 26:13. Andrew Benfer was just two seconds back after placing seventh overall as well.

"I'm happy that the men won today," said Barreau. "It was good experience to be at the front of a race and against some solid runners from William and Mary."

On the women's side, Jessica Lee led the way as the freshman speedster completed the 6k in 23:10. Following the first-year phenom, a pair of seniors placed third and fourth, respectively. Emmie Schmitt crossed the line in 23:24, while Logan Harrington was up next in 23:42.

Rounding out the squad's top-six performers, Gena Lewis clocked in at 23:46, Briana Stewart finished in 23:50, and Monica Lannen cruised to a 23:57 mark.

"The women had a very strong top-six today, and I was pleased with the small gap between runners," said Barreau. "That will bode well at the upcoming Championship meets."

Christopher Newport will now have a two-week layoff before taking part in the CAC Champoinships, which will be held in Hershey, Pennsylvania on October 29. The NCAA South / Southeast Regionals follow on November 12 in Mount Berry, Georgia, while the NCAA Championships will be contested in Louisville on November 19.

"Both squads are hungry, and that's what we need," said Barreau. "We are in shape, and hungry."
