NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Heading towards the start of championship season, the Christopher Newport cross country teams will close out the regular season this weekend as the Captains host the CNU Invitational on Saturday at Lee Hall Mansion.
 
Action gets underway at 11 a.m. with the start of the men's 8k race. At 11:45, the women will head out on the course for the 6k, while the open coed 3k is slated to begin at 12:30. With the CAC Championships fast approaching, the Captains are kicking into high gear. Entering this weekend, the men are currently ranked 19th in the latest USTFCCCA national poll and first in the South / Southeast region. Meanwhile, the women are also slotted fourth in the regional rankings.
 
On an individual level, the Captains have received huge efforts from several runners so far this year. On the men's side, Grayson Reid broke the school record in the 8k during the Paul Short Run after notching a time of 24:43. That shaved five seconds off the previous standard. Sam Murch and Daniel Read also added their names to the program's all-time top-15 8k performance list this year.
 
For the women, Emmie Schmitt and Jessica Lee have both received CAC Athlete of the Week accolades in 2016. Schmitt posted CNU's top effort at the Paul Short Run after completing the 6k in 22:38, which marked the second-fastest clocking of her career. Meanwhile, Lee won the College Division 5k during the William & Mary Invitational and also moved to ninth in program history in the 6k after registering a time of 22:41 at Lehigh.
 
Following Saturday's meet, the Captains will return to action with the CAC Championships in Hershey, Pennsylvania on October 29. The South / Southeast Regionals are slated for November 12 in Mount Berry, Georgia.
