Matt Kelchner today announced the release of the 2015 CNU football schedule.
The Captains, coming off an 8-4 record in 2014 and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, will open their 15th campaign at home against the College of New Jersey. The season opener will be the 150
th game in CNU history, and will be played on Saturday, September 5th, at POMOCO Stadium. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
The 2015 season will be the first for the Captains as a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference, and the opening game against TCNJ will be one of nine conference tilts. CNU has been a member of the USA South Athletic Conference for the last 14 seasons, winning ten conference titles. Christopher Newport will align with Capital Athletic Conference programs Frostburg State, Salisbury, Southern Virginia, and Wesley…as well as five previous members of the NJAC; Kean, Montclair State, the College of New Jersey, William Paterson, and Rowan.
"This is a big step for our program, and we couldn't be more excited about competing in the New Jersey Athletic Conference," Head Coach
Matt Kelchner said. "We had tremendous success in the USA South, and we look forward to continuing that winning tradition in the NJAC."
CNU will again play five home games at POMOCO Stadium in 2015, with various starting times. The only non-conference game of the season will be played in week two against Hampden-Sydney. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on September 12
th.
Christopher Newport will host Rowan on Saturday, October 3
rd, during Family Weekend at CNU. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Homecoming Weekend will feature a home game against Frostburg State on October 24
th, with kickoff at 7:00 p.m.
CNU will also host an early-afternoon start on Saturday, November 7
th, when the Captains entertain William Paterson in the final home regular-season game of 2015. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
Christopher Newport's road slate includes trips to Dover, DE; Salisbury, MD; Buena Vista, VA; as well as Union and Montclair, NJ.
The Christopher Newport football program began play in 2001, and has enjoyed remarkable success over its first 14 seasons. The Captains, who have been coached by
Matt Kelchner since the program's inception, have compiled an all-time record of 98-51 for a winning percentage of .658.
CNU has won ten conference titles in its first 14 seasons, recorded a conference record of 78-17 (.821), and has advanced to the NCAA Tournament ten times, including the first four years in program history.
