NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- Christopher Newport University freshman pitcher
Makayla Jenkins was named the Capital Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.
Jenkins, from Gloucester, earned the honor after throwing a complete-game shutout against top-ranked Salisbury in her first career start on Saturday. Jenkins struck out six and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work, leading the Captains to a 2-0 victory in the doubleheader nightcap.
Jenkins was making just her fifth appearance of the season due to an early-season foot injury. Her performance marked the first time that Salisbury has been shutout in 90 games dating back to March of 2012.
The Captains, 17-5 and 1-1 in the CAC, travel to Pennsylvania this weekend for conference doubleheaders at York on Saturday and at Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday.
