LINCOLN, Neb. -- Three Captains will represent the Christopher Newport track & field program at the 2014 NCAA Indoor Championships as
Enuma Ezenwa,
Richard Roethel, and
Dominique Torres all officially qualified for the national title meet, which will be held at Nebraska's Devaney Sports Center on March 14-15.
Roethel headlines the group after qualifying in both the high jump and heptathlon. Torres earned his spot for his performance in the triple jump, while Ezenwa will represent the women's team after receiving a bid in the pentathlon.
Heading back to the indoor championships for the fourth time in his career, Roethel currently ranks third in the nation in the high jump after clearing 2.11 meters. That height ranks second in CNU history and stands as the finest effort ever by anyone in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Farmingville, New York native also sits 10th in the country in the heptathlon with a score of 4,981. Two years ago, he won the NCAA title in the combined event and was honored as the 2012 USTFCCCA National Men's Field Athlete of the Year for that performance.
Torres is also making a return trip to the indoor championships after competing in the triple jump last year as well. During the 2013 competition, he placed 13th in the nation before finishing 18th at the outdoor championships. This season, the second-year standout collected first-team All-Conference accolades and won the CAC title in the triple. Currently, his 14.60-meter effort ranks eighth in the country entering the national meet.
On the women's side, Ezenwa will be competing in her first indoor national championship competition after finishing 21st in the heptathlon during the outdoor title meet last year. One of CNU's most well-rounded athletes, she set a school record in the pentathlon this year with a score of 3,466, which places her eighth in the NCAA. Honored as the 2014 CAC Co-Indoor Track Athlete of the Year, she collected first-team All-Conference accolades for her efforts in the 60-hurdles, long jump, and 4x400-relay.
The two-day NCAA Championship meet will begin on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Devaney Sports Center. Ezenwa and Roethel will kick off the competition with the start of the combined events on Friday morning. On Saturday, Roethel will contend for the high jump title at 10 a.m. before Torres heads out for the triple jump at 1:30 p.m.
