Complete ResultsTHROGGS NECK, N.Y. -- The CNU sailing team closed out its 2014 fall schedule at the Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) Fall Co-Ed Dinghy Championship this weekend, posting a 17th place finish at the War Memorial Regatta.
Competing in the conference championship, the Captains posted 16th-place finishes in each the A and B divisions. Sophomores
Austin Powers and
Nina Heatfield sailed all eight races in A division, while rookie
Xander van Beurden led the B division boat with
Kaitlin Welker and
Julia Davis. Only eight races were completed in the regatta due to a sustained heavy wind cancelling much of Sunday's racing.
"This team is resilient," said head coach
Maxwell Plarr. "Already team members and the coaching staff are contemplating what effort and changes it will take to move up to the next level in the Spring season."
Wind gusts in the 30-knot range halted sailing for most of the day on Sunday, eliminating any chance the Captains would have to move up the leaderboard. Only two races were completed on Sunday, including the best performance of the weekend for Van Beurden, with an eighth place finish in the final race.
Facing a shifty wind on Saturday, the Captains endured a pair of breakdowns in the first two races, but bounced back with a pair of top ten efforts in A division racing. Powers and Heatfield captured a 16th place finish with 106 total points, besting teams from UVa and Villanova. In B division, the CNU boat finished with 116 points, finishing ahead of Villanova and Buffalo.
