NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport women's distance medley relay set a new school-record and the CNU indoor track & field teams posted 41 personal bests during an excellent outing on the final day of the Captains Invitational at the Freeman Center on Sunday.
In the distance medley,
Jessica McClelland,
Graciela Slyer,
Lydia Cromwell, and
Melissa Rizor teamed up to trump the three-year-old school record. During the event, the foursome posted a time of 12:53.16, which placed them second during the invitational and shaved over two seconds off the old program mark set in 2010.
Along with the historic relay team, the Captains had several other strong efforts in distance events. Slyer finished 10th in the 800, Rizor and McClelland each placed in the top-six in the 1000-meter run, and
Emily Whitby and
Julie Machamer each recorded a fifth-place effort in the mile and 3000, respectively.
In other events,
Fredsal Walker secured a pair of top-10 showings after finishing eighth in the 60-meter hurdles before placing third in the 200-meter discipline. She was edged out in the latter event by teammate
Enuma Ezenwa, who crossed the line in 29.19, which was the second-fastest time during the invitational. Later, the two speedsters teamed with
Cheria Jackson and
Jennifer Westerholm to finish sixth in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:13.93.
Kalee Hammerton continued her strong effort in the pole vault this season, placing fourth with a height of 3.15 meters.
Olivia Green also had two excellent performances, leading the team with a third-place showing in the triple jump and a seventh-place effort in the long jump.
In other field events,
Rashidat Omotosho recorded the Captains' longest toss in the weight throw with a heave of 10.79 meters.
Noel Bartley led the way in the shot put, finishing 13th with an 8.91-meter toss.
On the men's side,
Robert Mayes notched a pair of PRs after placing sixth in the 200-meters with a time of 23.36 before crossing the line in the 400 in 50.97.
Doug McLellan also posted a top-10 effort in the 800, while
Brian Huffman recorded a personal-best while finishing seventh in the mile after completing the event in 4:28.52.
In other distance events,
Aaron Zook cruised to a 10th-place performance in the 3000-meters, while McLellan, Huffman,
Josh Showalter, and
Daniel Austin teamed up for a fourth-place showing in the distance medley. The foursome eventually finished the event in 11:02.17.
In the 200-hurdles,
Brian Strickland finished third with a time of 27.02, while
Daulton Teaford had several excellent efforts during the two-day meet. Along with setting a host of personal-bests during the heptathlon, highlighted by the top time in the 60-meter dash, he also teamed with Mayes,
Matt Gaddy, and
Nathan Joyce to notch a fourth-place showing in the 4x400 relay.
Along with the other top performances,
Joseph Taylor placed fourth in the pole vault after clearing 4.35-meters,
Cameron Calfee led CNU with a seventh-place effort in the high jump, and
Javan Walker pieced together a 13.05-meter triple jump, which was good enough for seventh in the field.
Christopher Newport will return to action on Friday when the Captains head to Lynchburg, Virginia for the start of the two-day Liberty Invitational.
