ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- Sailing against one of the toughest fleets of the year, the Christopher Newport sailing team finished among the top ten at the MAISA Fall Women's Dinghy Championship this weekend. The regatta featured five nationally ranked women's programs, including the second-ranked Naval Academy, who came away with the win.
CNU finished 10th out of 14 teams, posting a 263 point finish. The Captains B division boat finished ninth, with 121 points, and the A division tandem was 11th with 142 total points.
"This regatta gave us the ability to take a better look at some of the different combinations on the team to prepare for the South #2 Qualifier next weekend," head coach
Maxwell Plarr said. "We also have a better idea of our strengths and weaknesses to focus on in practice this week."
The Captains were able to sail six different women in B division on the weekend, led by
Grace Bluefeld. Bluefeld sailed with
Mary Catherine Buhl and then also skippered with crew
Tara Mahoney. Mahoney also saw races with
Victoria Miller at the helm. The B division boat grabbed a pair of top five efforts and eight more finishes in the top ten.
Annie Eckmann and
Julianne Costello sailed all 14 races in A division, posting five top ten finishes.
