LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Three different Christopher Newport University women's tennis players advanced to the consolation finals of their flight at the Liberty Fall Classic on Saturday. Seniors
Kim Morrissett and
Melisande Downs each picked up singles victories for the Captains, while junior
Marion Gloor also moved to play in the final.
Morrissett, playing in the third flight, earned her first win of 2012 when she dropped Norfolk State's Kia Batiste (6-4, 6-4) and advanced to face West Virginia State's Cora Berna. Berna then defeated the Captains' senior in a 6-1, 6-3 final.
In the seventh flight of action, two Captains were playing in the consolation bracket Saturday afternoon, including Downs. Facing WVSU's Amber Schneider, Downs dropped the first set in a tiebreak but bounced back to win the second 6-4. She finished off the match 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 by taking the tiebreaking set.
Angela Stallman also played in the seventh flight and picked up two games against her opponent, but fell 6-0, 6-2.
Gloor was competing in the fourth flight and advanced to the consolation final with a pair of byes where she would face James Madison's Megan Douglass. Douglass won her first match of the day (6-2, 6-1) to earn the opportunity to face CNU's Gloor in the final. Despite the CNU player taking two games in the opening set, Douglass won the match 6-2, 6-0.
CNU will now return home to prepare for next weekend's ITA South Atlantic Regional Championship held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
