NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Roanoke College continued its hot play Sunday at the Newport News Regional with a 4-1 victory over host, Christopher Newport University. Roanoke advances to the Regional championship Monday at 10:00 a.m. against the winners of Sunday's two late games.
Roanoke continues to ride the hot pitching of freshman, Kelly Higbie, who tossed a complete game, two-hitter for her third victory in three days. A day after shutting down one of the nation's most potent offenses in top seeded Emory, Higbie stymied the Captains for the final six innings of the game.
CNU scored in the bottom of the first after left fielder
Kelley Foate led off with a walk and immediately stole second.
Kristina McLaughlin sacrificed Foate to third and set up freshman first baseman,
Sabrina Hill who hit a sacrifice fly to right-center. It would be the only run CNU could manufacture on the day.
Roanoke quickly answered in the top of the second with an RBI double from third baseman Katherine Kouri. Kouri drove in Caitlin Manuel who reached on a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.
The pitchers dominated the rest of the game as CNU starter
Krista Townsend kept the Maroons off the board until the seventh when Leona Rainey singled home Kouri and junior left fielder, Hollee Warlitner hit a two run home run to provide the final scoring.
Roanoke's win places them in the Regional Championship game Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Captains Park on the campus of Christopher Newport University. CNU will return to action to play an elimination game at approximately 2:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon against the winner of Sunday's first elimination game between #8 seed McDaniel and #3 seed Salisbury.
