Ceremonies will be held February 18th at the Freeman Center

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University Athletic Hall of Fame will induct six new members later this month. Director of Athletics C.J. Woollum today announced the 2012 Hall of Fame class that will be honored on February 18th during halftime of the CNU/Averett men's basketball game.

“This is a tremendous class to join our Hall of Fame,” Woollum said. “These six individuals represent the very best of Christopher Newport athletics.”

The CNU baseball program will be represented twice as CHRIS PHAUP and JEREMY ELLIOTT join the Hall of Fame. Phaup and Elliott led the Captains to back-to-back NCAA World Series appearances and were both All-Americans.

Phaup played at CNU in 2002 and 2003 and was a two-time All-Region, All-State and All-Conference selection. He was a member of the All-World Series Team and the all-time leader in slugging percentage, batting average and second in home runs in CNU baseball history.

Elliott was a Captain from 2000-2003 and is the single-season record holder for stolen bases. He also ranks third all-time at CNU in career batting average.

MICHELLE KASS-PREWITT, a standout pitcher for the CNU softball squad, will also be inducted on February 18th. Kass-Prewitt played for the Captains from 2003-2005 and was a two-time All-South Region selection. She is the all-time strikeout leader at CNU with 488 K's and ranks second in career ERA (1.15). Kass-Prewitt was the USA South Pitcher of the Year once and All-Conference all three seasons.

The 2012 induction class also includes SHADI ABI-SAAB from the CNU men's soccer program. Abi-Saab led the Captains from 1997-2000 and still ranks among the top ten in career goals, points and assists. He was named first team All-Region, All-State and twice selected All-Conference in the USA South. Abi-Saab was a tremendous contributor to CNU's 18-3-1 record and first NCAA “Elite Eight” appearance as a senior.

HAPPY DARCUS was a ten time All-American in track & field at Christopher Newport and will become a Hall of Famer as well. Darcus, who ran for CNU from 2002-2005, achieved All-American status seven times in individual events. She was the National Runner-Up at the 2003 NCAA Indoor in the 55 meters, and was a three-time Mason-Dixon Conference Individual Champion.

Cross Country standout AIMEE GIBBS completes the 2012 induction class. Gibbs ran for the Captains from 2000-2003 and was a four-time NCAA National Championship Qualifier. She also was a four-time USA South Conference Champion & Runner of the Year. Gibbs won the USA South's Don Scalf Award in back-to-back years and still holds CNU's fastest 5K time at 18:22.

The Christopher Newport University Hall of Fame will welcome these six new members as well as many current members back to campus on February 18th, the final day of the basketball regular season. The Captains host Peace in a 2 p.m. women's game followed by the CNU men vs. Averett at 4 p.m. The Hall of Fame ceremony will take place at halftime of the men's game at the Freeman Center.
