NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The NCAA National Selection Committee announced today that the Christopher Newport University men's soccer team, ranked 13th in last week's NSCAA National Rankings, earned an at-large bid into the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The Captains are slated to face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the opening round in a neutral site game on the campus of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania.
CNU has posted a 15-3-2 overall mark this season behind USA South Coach of the Year
Steve Shaw. Shaw's squad will make its fifth straight NCAA appearance and eighth overall.
The Captains, led by Conference Player of the Year
Jalon Brown, boast one of the nation's most potent offensive attacks. CNU is averaging three goals per game with Brown pouring in 39 points so far. Senior
Andrew Bonorden has also pieced together a stellar final campaign, with 31 points on 13 goals and five assists.
CNU was eliminated from the USA South Tournament in the semifinal round to Greensboro College. The Pride would go on to fall to Methodist University, who earned the conference's automatic berth into the postseason tournament.
RPI won the Liberty League's automatic berth with a championship win in penalty kicks this weekend. The Engineers dropped Vassar College to improve to 9-5-6 overall this season and boast a very stingy defense. RPI has allowed just 15 goals in 20 games this season for an average of 0.75 per game. Sophomore keeper Rob Dewald has led the way with eight shutouts this season and a save percentage over 85%.
The other two teams in the first- and second-round pod includes host Swarthmore College (14-2-2) and Albertus Magnus (15-3-3).
