USA South Names Brown, Shaw Major Award Winners; Nine Captains Earn All-Conference Honors

Sophomore Jalon Brown named Conference Player of the Year

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The USA South Athletic Conference announced its men's soccer All-Conference honors today with Christopher Newport University matching a program-high with nine selections. For the fourth year in a row, CNU boasts the Conference Player of the Year, as sophomore Jalon Brown netted the league's top honor in 2012, and for a second consecutive season and eighth time in his career, head coach Steve Shaw picked up Conference Coach of the Year laurels.

Brown, a sophomore forward from Yorktown, Virginia, has pieced together one of the finest seasons in CNU history, pouring in 39 points in his first year at the top of the Captains attack. He has scored 14 goals and added a league-high 11 assists, both marks ranking seventh in program history. The 39 points rank fourth all-time for a single season, as he has led a dominant attack that ranks eighth in the nation in scoring offense (3.16 goals per game). Brown ranks 14th in the nation in total points, seventh in assists and 24th in total goals. The Captain earned First Team All-Conference honors for the second time, leading a group of nine total selections this year.

Coach Shaw earns his eighth USA South Coach of the Year honor, leading the Captains to their eighth regular season title in the last 12 seasons. In CNU's final year in the USA South, the Captains wrapped up the regular season with a 14-2-2 overall mark including a 6-1-1 record in USA South action. The Captains rank 13th nationally according to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and are currently playing for a potential fourth straight USA South Conference Tournament title.

This season, CNU collected nine All-Conference honors on the First, Second and Honorable Mention teams. Joining Brown on the First Team was senior midfielder Sean Moriarty and a trifecta of defensive players, Alec Faulkner, Tommy O'Neal and Caleb Baker. Moriarty, a 2011 First Team All-American, made the move into the middle of the park as a senior and has chipped in career-highs in goals, assists and points. The defensive group is among the most impressive in school history, as CNU has allowed a paltry 7.3 shots per game this season and are holding opponents to just 1.11 goals per game.

Seniors Andrew Bonorden, Denny Arinello and junior Caleb Lewis earned Second Team honors for the Captains, as part of the dominant offensive unit. Bonorden has cruised up the all-time scoring charts in his final year as a full-time starter at forward, and is second on the team this year with 31 total poinst. He has posted career highs in goals (13) and assists (5), earning All-Conference honors for the second time in his career. Arinello and Lewis locked down the starting jobs as the outside midfielders for Coach Shaw and provided the Captains with dynamic speed and technical ability all year long. Arinello had a knack for coming up in clutch moments, scoring two game-winning goals and assisting on six scoring strikes this year. Lewis, picking up his second All-Conference honor, finished with five goals and five assists to rank third on the squad in scoring.

Rounding out the Captains All-Conference honors was junior goalkeeper Sean Killion as an Honorable Mention selection. In his first season between the pipes, Killion sports a 9-2-2 record with four shutouts, posting a 1.11 goals against average.

For the third year in a row, senior Michael Zimmerman earned All-Sportsmanship honors. The North Carolina native enjoyed a breakout season in his final campaign, starting 12 games and playing in all 19. He scored one goal and chipped in four assists.

North Carolina Wesleyan forward Andri Bjarnason earned the USA South Rookie of the Year honor. For the complete release of the 2012 Men's Soccer All-Conference Team, click here
