RICHMOND, VA- The Touchdown Club of Richmond honored two members of the CNU football program Thursday night. The organization selected Christopher Newport Head Coach
Matt Kelchner as its Division II & III/NAIA Coach of the Year and sophomore
Derek Britt was honored as the NCAA Division II & III/NAIA Defensive Back of the Year.
Kelchner has guided the CNU program since its inception, and was named the USA South Coach of the Year for the sixth time in 11 seasons. He has led CNU teams to an overall record of 76-40 for a career winning percentage of .655.
Britt, a product of Glen Allen, Va., made 50 tackles this season and also broke up seven passes. He picked off a team-high three passes and also blocked a kick for the Captains. He was a USA South first team all-conference selection.
The Captains posted a record of 8-3 last season and won the USA South Championship by going 7-0 in conference play. CNU advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 8th time in 11 years of football history.
This event honored the All Metro Football Team as selected by the Richmond Times-Dispatch as well as the High School Coaches of the Year in the Richmond Metro Area. Mike London, UVA Head Coach, was honored as the Division I Coach of the Year. The banquet Thursday night was held at the Hilton Richmond Hotel & Spa.
