CNU Women's Lacrosse Picked to Win USA South Title in Preseason Poll

The Captains have captured the crown the last five season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University women's lacrosse team was picked to finish first in the USA South Women's Lacrosse Coaches Poll released today. The Captains have won the conference the last five seasons and have captured the USA South Tournament title the last six seasons. The Captains received seven first place votes for 49 points in the poll as head coaches do not vote for their own teams.

The Captains, under the direction of head coach Carolyn Raveia, finished 13-6 overall and 7-0 in conference action in 2011. The Captains graduated three seniors, including Player of the Year Kaitlin Quigley and four-year first team selection Meghan Harkey but are returning a strong squad in 2012.

The Captains will look to 2011 first team selections junior Monica Evans and sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Wilkerson to lead the team defensively this season. Sophomore Ashton Marshall, also a first team selection last season, will lead the Captains' attack. The midfield will continue to be strong for the Captains as they return three all-conference players in Lauren King (2nd team), Rachel Tomlinson (2nd team) and Kelly Lane (honorable mention).

Shenandoah finished second in the poll with 42 points and the remaining first place vote. Coming in third was Greensboro, who the Captains played in the 2011 USA South Tournament championship game, with 38 points.

The 2012 USA South Women's Lacrosse Tournament wil once again be played at Springwood Park in Burlington, N.C. on April 13-14.
