NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Christopher Newport University golf team was picked third in the USA South preseason coaches poll. The Captains earned one first place vote and 29 points while Methodist was given five first place votes and 34 points. Greensboro edged the Captains by one point and also had one first place vote.

Head coach Jamie Coleman and the Captains are coming off of their first ever conference tournament championship in 2011 advancing them to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000.

The Captains finished 11th in the NCAA championship and four of the five team members who competed in the champhionship tournament are returning, including 2011 first team USA South Conference selection Joseph Evans.

The 2012 USA South Golf Tournament will be played at Stoney Creek Golf Club in Burlington, North Carolina on April 13-15.
