FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Christopher Newport University men's tennis team was picked to finish second in the 2012 USA South Men's Tennis Coaches Poll released today. The Captains collected one first-place votes and hauled in 31 points in the conference preseason poll.
Head coach
Rush Cole and the Captains finished 14-7 overall, 5-1 in the USA South last season and reached the USA South Tournament Championship. CNU fell to N.C. Wesleyan, who received six of seven first-place votes (36 points) as head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
The Captains return the bulk of their squad from last year, including All-American
Eric Shulman at the top spot, and
Gian Heyer at the No. 2 slot. In doubles, Shulman paired with
Matt King this fall to finish fourth at the ITA Small College National Championship.
Averett University placed third in the poll with 24 points while Methodist University followed in fourth with 23 points. The top-four spots in the poll remain the same as a year ago while Greensboro College, Shenandoah University and Ferrum College, respectfully, round out the voting.
The 2012 USA South Men's Tennis Tournament will once again be played at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, North Carolina on April 13-15.
