CNU Mourning the Death of Brian Herrmann

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Christopher Newport University community today is mourning the death of student-athlete Brian Herrmann, who was a member of the CNU men's basketball team for the last three years. Brian, a junior from Newport News, was killed in a car accident late Saturday night. He was 21 years old.

"Our University and Athletic Department have suffered a terrible loss," Director of Athletics C.J. Woollum said. "Brian's teammates and coaches have come together today to share in their grief. We are all thinking of Brian and send our condolences to his family."

Brian Charles Herrmann was born in Hawaii on October 10, 1989. He was a 2008 graduate of Denbigh High School, where he was an outstanding football and basketball player. For his senior season, Herrmann was selected to the all-Peninsula district team after being named the most-improved player on his Denbigh team the year before. He was recruited to play basketball at CNU by C.J. Woollum and Roland Ross, and immediately exhibited his tremendous skills as a Captain.

Brian became a successful sixth man playing for Woollum's teams in his first two seasons. He was a versatile forward, and a strong scorer as well as a solid rebounder. Brian usually came off the CNU bench to give the Captains much-needed energy. He was a key part of CNU's championship season as a sophomore and played in the NCAA Tournament.

This past year Brian played for new head coach John Krikorian, and continued his growth on and off the court. He came back following an early-season injury and quickly returned to form. Brian continued to show great versatility, playing inside as well as on the wing, and averaged nine points and six rebounds per game for the Captains in a very successful 18-9 season.

"We have lost a very special young man who was a big part of our basketball family," Head Coach John Krikorian said. "Brian was one of the most likable and respectful people I've ever been around. He valued his friendships with his teammates more than anything else in the world, and we are going to miss him greatly."

Brian is survived by his mother, Jackie Herrmann, and a brother, Adam Peak.
