CNU Will Head to Lebanon Valley for Sweet 16

Captains take on #9 Kean on neutral floor

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- After sweeping their first and second round games at home, the 11th ranked Christopher Newport University Captains (27-3) will head to Lebanon Valley College for the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. CNU will face number nine Kean University (24-4) in the Captains third Sweet 16 appearance in school history and the second straight.

The NCAA National Committee announced that Lebanon Valley would host the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight round on Sunday, and the pod will include the host Dutchmen (27-2) taking on William Paterson (26-3) in the other game.

Game times and ticket information will be released later this week, stay tuned to CNUsports.com for more information.

The Sweet 16 matchup will be the first time CNU and Kean have faced off in over 25 years. The only time the two teams paired up was in the 1984-85 season, when Kean took a 66-52 decision at home.

The Captains (27-3) won the USA South Championship for the third consecutive season to earn the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. CNU advanced to the Sweet 16 with a win over York College in the first round and a second round victory over Johns Hopkins. Kean University reached its fourth Sweet 16 in the last five seasons with a first round win over Vassar and a second round win over Western Connecticut State. Kean received an at-large bid into the Big Dance after being upset by Rutgers-Newark in the NJAC semifinals.

Christopher Newport is led by the nation's leading scorer, Chelsie Schweers, who is averaging 25.5 points per game. She scored 33 and 37 points in the Captains first two NCAA Tournament games, setting a new program mark for points in NCAA play. Schweers is backed up by a pair of senior forwards, Barbara Davis and Jessica Moore. Both were all-conference selections this season.

Kean has been a top 10 team for the bulk of the season and are led by NJAC Co-Player of the Year Tiffany Patrick. Patrick averages 14.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Naimah Clemons also averages over 14 points per game for the Cougars.

Sweet 16 games will be played at the Lebanon Valley Gymnasium this Friday, March 11, with times to be determined. The Elite Eight game will be played on Saturday, March 12, between the two winners on Friday.
