Schweers Named to D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week

CNU Senior first player to reach 2,500 mark since 2000

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University senior Chelsie Schweers (Chesapeake, Va.) was named to the D3Hoops.com National Team of the Week for her performance last week, leading the Captains to a 3-0 week against USA South opponents.

Schweers became the first player to reach the 2,500 point mark since Ronda Jo Miller in 2000 and is one of just five players in NCAA Division III history to reach the plateau. She also set a new career-high for scoring in a game, with 45 points against Meredith. Against the Angels, Schweers tied the second-best mark in NCAA history for three-pointers in a game with 11.

Schweers has now scored 2,513 points in her career and is just four three-pointers shy of second all-time (364). She was named the USA South Player of the Week as well, after averaging 31.0 points per game.

The senior Captain started the week off by filling the stat sheet against Mary Baldwin, scoring 19 points and adding seven rebounds, six assists and two steals. In a 79-35 defeat of Peace, Schweers contributed 29 points, five rebounds, one assist and one steal. She knocked down seven three's against the Pacers.

Then, against Meredith, Schweers rounded out her weekend with a career-high 45 points, eclipsing the 2,500-point plateau in the process. She grabbed six boards, dished four assists and had one steal in the game as well. Chelsie was 15-23 from the field, including 11-16 from long range.

She became just the second player in CNU history to score 40 points in more than one game in her career, joining Misty Hart, and the 45 points was just three shy of the all-time best set by Karen Barefoot in 1993.

The Captains are off until Saturday, when they will play host to N.C. Wesleyan in a doubleheader with the men's teams. The CNU women will tip at 2:00 pm.
