NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Sophomore
Sam Venker (Clearwater Beach, Fla.) scored his second goal in as many games in the 38th minute of action to help fifth ranked CNU (2-0-0) sneak past the Haverford Fords (0-1-0), 2-1. Venker's goal was the gamewinner, while junior
Steven Farmer (Poquoson, Va.) added his first of the season in the 10th minute.
CNU jumped on top early, scoring in the first ten minutes of action. Senior midfielder
Clif Kipper and Farmer shared a couple touches at the top of the box before Farmer sent a burner low down the right side past the diving Haverford keeper.
The Fords would answer just over four minutes later, though, as David Restrepo connected on a loose ball, sending a re-directed kick past the Captains diving GK
Justin Wolfe. The rest of the half saw both teams with chances, but it would be CNU finding paydirt with the eventual gamewinner coming in the 38th minute.
After a scrum in the Haverford box, the Fords managed to clear the ball to the left side, but Venker collected it and lofted a 30-yarder into the upper right corner for the score.
Jamey Applegate, the Haverford GK, collected seven saves in the setback to lead the Fords. CNU put nine shots on goal off seven different feet, led by Venker and
Denny Arinello with two each.
Haverford will play Virginia Wesleyan (0-2-0) in the first game on Sunday, at 4:00 pm. The Captains improved to 2-0-0 on the season with the victory and will play Stockton College (2-0-0) tomorrow in the finale to the 2010 VCAM CNU Classic at 6:00 pm.
