Captains Suffer Loss to Top-Ranked Messiah in Season Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- The CNU women's soccer team opened its season on Friday night, suffering a 7-0 setback to the number one team in the nation, two-time defending national champion Messiah College. Sophomore goalkeeper registered a new career-high in her first start, with eleven.

The Captains took on Messiah in a neutral site contest at Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday night. They will return to Virginia Beach for a game against Montclair State University tomorrow evening at 5:00 pm.

Tonight, the Captains went down 5-0 by the first half, including a goal scored before the first minute was out by Messiah's Joanna Haqq off an assist from 2008 National Player of the Year Amanda Naeher. Naeher would add a pair of goals in the contest, dropping CNU to 0-1-0 on the season.

CNU managed four shots in the game, including three on-frame. Lauren Fleming, Carly Utterback and Jackie Bond forced the Messiah keeper to make saves. The CNU keeper, sophomore Meghan Gumbs notched a new career-high in saves with 11, while playing the full 90 for the Captains.
