2010-11 CNU Basketball Schedules Announced

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- Christopher Newport University Basketball Coaches John Krikorian and Carolyn Hunter today released their schedules for the 2010-11 season.

Head Men's Basketball Coach John Krikorian begins his first season leading the Captains on Friday, November 19th when CNU plays host to Lynchburg College. The men's squad will play six teams that participated in the 2010 NCAA Division III tournament and four teams that were ranked in the Top 25 at one point during last season.  Four of CNU's first six opponents were NCAA Tournament teams in 2009-10.

Our vision is to be the very best program in the nation,” said Krikorian. “This schedule should let us know exactly how high we need to climb in order to get there.  I know our players are excited about the opportunity to compete against teams of this caliber.

The men's squad will host three tournaments in the upcoming season. The Beck Company Classic will kick the season off at the Freeman Center on November 19th and 20th.  The CNU/Point Plaza Invitational will be played on Thanksgiving weekend, November 26th and 27th and the Captains Shootout will take place on December 29th and 30th.

The CNU women's team returns to the Freeman Center court on Thursday November 18th against Division II opponent Virginia Union. “Our schedule is much more difficult than last year,” said Head Coach Carolyn Hunter. “We have our work cut out for us this year, but I believe that we will be up to the task.”

The women are coming off an amazing 30-1 season in 2009-10 that included a 30-game winning streak and a trip to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. The Captains return three-time All-American Chelsie Schweers, who has scored 1,999 points over her first three seasons.

The women's schedule includes home games against 2010 NCAA Tournament participants Messiah College and the University of Mary Washington, as well as a trip to Washington & Lee in a rematch of last year's NCAA First Round game played at CNU.
