Ross Preparing for 28th season on CNU Bench

NEWPORT NEWS, VA- There is only one person who can say he's played or coached with every men's basketball coach in the 43-year history of Christopher Newport University's program. That person is ROLAND ROSS, who will continue coaching on the CNU sideline for the 28th straight season in 2010-2011.

New Christopher Newport men's basketball coach John Krikorian today formally announced that Ross will be one of his assistant coaches.

“It was obvious from our first meeting that coach Ross has a tremendous passion for Christopher Newport basketball,” Krikorian said. “Not only is he a proud CNU alumnus with three decades of experience recruiting and coaching some of the top student-athletes in Hampton Roads, but he is a good man and a hard worker.”

Ross played his first two seasons as a Captain for Bev Vaughan, and then finished his playing career under Glenn Russell. He would later begin his coaching tenure during Russell's final season, and then spent 26 seasons assisting C.J. Woollum. Ross will also continue in his role as CNU's Director of Community Outreach.

“His actions in serving our local community through CNU's outreach program speak volumes about his values,” Krikorian continued. “I am looking forward to working with and learning from coach Ross.”

Ross has been at the forefront of bringing some of the best talent in Division III history to the CNU campus. He has helped recruit nine All-Americans and 11 players who have gone on to play professionally. He has also organized countless student-athlete efforts to improve the lives of many in the local community.

“I'm very excited to continue my coaching career at Christopher Newport University, a place I love very much,” Ross said. “Our teams have enjoyed tremendous success on and off the court over the years, and I'm really looking forward to continuing that success with John Krikorian.”

Earlier this month, former Menchville head coach and CNU alum Erick Mays joined Krikorian's staff as an assistant coach. Krikorian, who was named to succeed Woollum as head coach on June 14th, is expected to add one more assistant coach next week to complete his staff.
