NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University sophomores
Eric Shulman (Glen Allen, Va.) and
Gianandrea Heyer (Lugano, Switzerland) were named to the 2010 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Men's Tennis Team this weekend. Shulman, a Division III ITA All-American, earned First Team honors hauling in yet another postseason accolade for the Captains, while Heyer was named to the Second Team.
Shulman was named USA South Player of the Year and earned a trip to the NCAA Division III Singles Championships in 2010. He finished the year ranked fourth in the Atlantic South Region and compiled a singles record of 16-5 at the top position for CNU. He faced ITA Senior Player of the Year John Watts (Washington University in St. Louis) at the national tournament and became the first Division III player to ever hand Watts a 6-0 set loss in his career. Shulman was the only one to stretch Watts past the second set in the tournament as he was en route to the national championship.
Heyer was also named to the All-USA South First Team in 2009-10, after posting a 15-4 mark in singles play, including a 10-1 mark at the No. 2 slot. He added 11 wins in doubles play, and helped lead Christopher Newport into the national rankings.
In 2009-10, Shulman and Heyer led the Captains to a 14-9 record, second place in the USA South regular season and tournament and a share of the final No. 30 national ranking with Brandeis.
