NEWPORT NEWS, VA -
Eric Shulman's honors keep rolling in after his superlative 2010 sophomore season for the men's tennis team at Christopher Newport University.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named him an NCAA Division III All-American for 2010. One of several ways to become an All-America singles player in Division III is to finish ranked among the nation's top 20, and Shulman made the cut by coming in at No. 19.
Shulman was the USA South Player of the Year, and he finished the year at No. 4 in the Atlantic South Region.
The Deep Run High graduate was the only man to win a set off of eventual champion
John Watts from Washington University of St. Louis in the NCAA singles tournament.
In his NCAA debut, Shulman played Watts to 6-0, 0-6, 6-3 in the first round of the tournament at Oberlin in Ohio. Watts won his last four matches in straight sets.
Those facts certainly didn't hurt Shulman's ranking, which he built by defeating numerous ranked opponents and only losing one regular-season match to a D-III foe. He led the Captains to a 14-9 record, second place in the USA South regular season and tournament, and a share of the final No. 30 national ranking with Brandeis.
