NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Monday evening the winners of USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year honors for the 2010 Outdoor Track & Field season in Division III as voted by the division's coaches.
Christopher Newport University received two of the honors handed out. In the South/Southeast Region, CNU freshman
Richard Roethel was named the Men's Field Athlete of the Year. Roethel, a freshman from Farmingville, N.Y., ranks eighth in the decathlon and ninth in the high jump headed into this weekend's NCAA Championships. He scored a total of 27 points at the Mason Dixon Conference Championships, including a runner-up finish in the javelin. Roethel has also recorded a provisional qualifying mark in the long jump this season.
Micheal Hanks, CNU's jumps coach, has been named the South/Southeast Region Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. Hanks and his group placed 1-2-5 in the long jump and 1-5-7 in the triple jump at the Mason Dixon Championships.
Separate categories are assigned to track athletes and field athletes as well as head coaches and assistant coaches.
Hanks and Roethel will participate in the NCAA Division III Championships held on the campus of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, beginning Thursday.
